Turnberry Lighthouse

Turnberry Lighthouse

An image from a trip to Turnberry lighthouse for the sunset last week.

The lack of cloud in the sky for the sunset meant that I had to search for an alternative viewpoint. I captured the rays of the setting sun illuminating the lighthouse and rocks with a golden glow. I used a Lee ‘Big Stopper’ filter to lengthen the exposure to 2 minutes to blur the incoming waves.

A cloud covered sunset

The conditions looked good, the bank of cloud was moving very slowly.  There was a clear strip of sky along the horizon.  These were the ideal conditions for a good sunset, as when the sun sinks down to the horizon there is a chance that it lights up the underside of the bank of cloud and gives a wonderful display of colours.  In an ideal world this would happen all the time, but on this occasion it was not to be.

I still managed to get a couple of images which were pleasing to me.  No great show of reds or oranges in the sky though but a slight tinge of blue mixed in with the grey certainly helped lift the sky.  This is Saltcoats beach looking over towards the Isle of Arran in the distance.

Saltcoats Sunset

Another image which I think is the stronger of the two.  Closer to sunset and a better foreground and more interesting sky.

The Last Post

Tonight’s sunset. Between the howling wind and the heavy showers I managed to get this one. Even though the tide was on it’s way out, the waves still managed to blow over the side of the sea wall. Luckily I had a carrier bag in the car to cover the camera to stop it getting wet from the spray. On the left side of the horizon, you can just see the rain moving in.  Ten minutes later and the downpour started, luckily by then the sunset was over and it was time to leave.

Stevenston Sunset

I was hoping for a decent sunset tonight, so I headed out to Stevenston on the off-chance that it would turn out okay.  I have been meaning to visit these groynes for a long time but never got round to it till now.  I spent a bitterly cold hour on the beach taking a few images.  It wasn’t the best sunset I’ve ever seen but I did manage to get a shot I was happy with.

La Pulente Slip – St Ouen’s Bay Sunset

La Pulente slip at St Ouen’s bay in Jersey was the location for this fine sunset.  The previous post of the two fishermen was also taken at this location.  Once they had left empty-handed I had the slip to myself and could concentrate on getting some good images from the sunset.  Due to the very high tide, the slip was getting nearly totally covered on each incoming wave.  I spent a while trying to capture some pleasing movement of the waves over the cobbles.  The first image has the slip nearly totally covered and I think the movement of the waves gives this image a bit of life.   I did manage to get my feet wet taking this one!

La Pulente Sunset

The next two images concentrate more on the contrast between the reddish brown of the cobbles and the contrast between the white of the waves over the rest of the slip.

I spent nearly a couple of hours here around the sunset getting loads of various images and altogether it was a very successful nights shooting.  More images from this shoot will follow in the coming days.
