Hitech Reverse ND Grad Filters – A first Look

Last week I received another parcel from Formatt-Hitech.  This time I have got a set of reverse ND Grads to try out.  Hopefully I will have a full review soon.

Hitech Reverse ND Grads

Initial thoughts are that the filters look well made.  The gradations look uniform and level.  There seems to be no discernable colour casts too.  The only minus point, in my opinion, is the plastic pouches that the filters come in.  I much prefer the padded cloth pouches that Lee use and Hitech use for the Pro Stop ND filter.

Hi Robert. V interested to read your findings about the Hitech 10 stop ND filter. I saw your version about the previous ‘mark 1′ write up of same product . Its clearly improved vastly.
I was looking to buy a filter and was looking at the HOYA 400 and B+H 110 which are circular filters. The latter both seemed to really suffer from warm casts. Do you think I would b better with the Hitech?. I already have the 100m Lee adapter for lens mounting.

    Kind regards, Paul

    Hi Paul,

The thing I dont like about round filters is the extra hassle in actually using them in the field, especially if you want to combine a grad along with the ND filter. The extra fiddling around in screwing in a circular filter and then trying to get a grad on along with it just makes it unusable for me.

I dont think the warm cast would be any more difficult to correct than the Blue cast of the pro stop filter. So for me the square filters are easier to use and because you already have the Lee holder makes it even more of a plus for the square filter.

Thankyou Robert. That’s made my decision easier. I’m off up to Tyree Island in Scotland mid september so I’ll get myself sorted for then.
Look forward to reading your grad filter write up.
    Kind regards, Paul

No problem Paul, Enjoy your trip. Hopefully I might have the review finished by then, I have been busy at work recently and haven’t had much of a chance to get out and actually try the filters out.
